School of Theology

(greater picture)

Since 1620 the Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln has conducted a school of theology for its own clerics and for those of other abbeys. It is also attended by students of other communties or of other dioceses who want to become priests. Flourishing times, when up to 30 students attended the school, changed to times with less students. Recently some nuns from different convents have also studied at the school in order to acquire a deeper knowledge of theology.
Legal Status
The school, formerly organized according to the consuetudinary law, has been adapted to the standars required by the Second Vatican Council. In 1996 the Roman Congregation of Studies licensed the affiliation of the Einsiedeln School of Theology with the Papal University St. Anselmo in Rome. In special circumstances the school can confer a bachelor degree of theology.

Prerequisites for admission
"Maturity-Diploma", "General Certificate of Education" or a documentation of secondary or higher studies. If an introduction to Philosophy and its history or if other basic knowledge ist lacking, a supplementary program is offered.
All students are welcome who have a positive attitude toward the spiritual framework and the goals of the Einsiedeln abbey school of theology.
